You could weep at the beauty of it - indeed at the beauty and strength of Saarinen's piece and its marvellous performers
THE VILLAGE VOICE

I've not seen, or experienced, anything like it

Worth seeing twice, minimum, not just to listen and look but to re-experience the rigour and vigour of the dancing ... a work of piercing beauty that can resonate within a modern society whose values are so tattered and torn

Multi-award-winning dancer-choreographer Tero Saarinen draws on classical ballet, Japanese butoh and modern dance to create a unique physical language that has marked him as one of the most significant choreographers of his generation.

A spellbinding work of striking intensity, Borrowed Light is inspired by the simplicity, passion and communal values of the American Shaker religious movement.

Eight dancers whirl, stomp and leap to the live accompaniment of the world-renowned early music vocal ensemble The Boston Camerata. Singing simple, haunting melodies rarely heard outside Shaker communities, the soaring voices of the eight singers combine with the percussive quality of the dance to weave intricate rhythms of beauty.

Shifting streams of brilliant white light - by designer Mikki Kunttu - echo the Shaker's use of ‘borrowed light': skylights and interior windows that maximise natural light, an aesthetic that still inspires design today.

The result is a study of light and elegance, vigour and raw energy - a powerful and unforgettable experience.
