In 1644, at 22 years of age, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, aka Molière, was forced to spend some time in a debtor's prison after his touring company became bankrupt.
He is rescued by the bumbling aristocrat Monsieur Jourdain (Fabrice Luchini), who smuggles a disguised Molière into his chalet so that Molière can teach him the finer points of acting.
Complications are plentiful as this lively romp moves from comedy and romance to tragedy and back again. Proving himself to be an inspired farceur, a bewigged and wonderfully witty Romain Duris excels in the demanding role of the tortured Molière.
