Music :: Messiaen Catalogue d’oiseaux
Catalogue d'oiseaux is a work of prodigious dimensions ... incandescent with emotions
THE AUSTRALIAN
Harvey plays like a man possessed ... maintaining absolute textural clarity whatever the tempo
INTERNATIONAL PIANO MAGAZINE
One of the landmarks of 20th century piano literature, the immense Catalogue d'oiseaux (Catalogue of birds) is a formidable musical challenge rarely performed in its entirety. Olivier Messiaen lovingly notated the calls and environments of birds on the point of extinction in 1958, transforming them into 13 dazzling and kaleidoscopic tableaux.
Virtuoso pianist Michael Kieran Harvey's daring and stamina brings the seven books of the Catalogue into living colour. Messiaen's descriptive prose, written as an introduction to each piece, is narrated by innovative conservationist Martin Copley.
Performed in three remarkable recitals over two days - in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Messiaen's birth and the 50th anniversary of this monumental work - this is the first performance of the Catalogue d'oiseaux in Western Australia.
