Perth Writers Festival :: America
The State of the Union
America - the world's greatest democracy and only superpower is a nation of contrast and contradictions. Is it the leader of the free world, or an isolationist society turning away from the world's problems? Post Katrina and Kyoto and now increasingly isolated in Iraq, what is the future for the United States?
Three authors with very different experiences of the US reflect on the state of the union: Vanity Fair editor at large, Cullen Murphy, considers the similarities of the US to that other great empire, Rome. Don Watson, in a deeply personal and reflective journey through America, explores religion and race, politics and people. Finally, veteran journalist Michael Gawenda's experience of living in George Bush's USA is fascinating and insightful, part memoir and part reflection on his connection with America going back to childhood.
